Farewell photography

is a meaningful but still relatively unknown genre in many parts of the world. Often surrounded by taboo, it takes a special kind of photographer to capture these final moments with empathy and sensitivity.

In collaboration with two highly experienced and respected farewell photographers and educators, Boukje Canaan and Rob de Joode, in the Netherlands — where farewell photography is already a recognized and increasingly popular genre — we created the Farewell Collection.

We also sat down with Boukje and Rob to explore what farewell photography is all about, how to get started, how to prepare for this kind of work, and what it means to be a farewell photographer.

Meet Boukje Canaan: finding meaning in farewell photography

With a background in directing, camera work, and photography, Boukje brings both technical expertise and a profound understanding of human emotion to her work. Since specializing in funeral photography in 2012, she has helped professionalize the field, founded the Dutch platform Afscheidsmomenten.nl, developed the “Competent Funeral Photographer” course, and helped establish the Funeral Photographer Quality Mark.
